Do you know what is CHIMER? It is one of projects funded by the European Commission's Information Society R&D programme (www.cordis.lu/ist/ka3/digicult/home.html). It sets out to capitalize on the natural enthusiasm and interests of children in developing new approaches to the use of evolving technologies for documenting items of cultural interest in their local communities.

You have entered the English version of the Lithuanian CHIMER web site where Lithuanian children will create in digital space their own understanding and images of Lithuanian cultural heritage objects (The Old Town of Vilnius). The Consortium partners can watch what is going on in the Lithuanian site which is created by the Vilnius "Minties" Gymnasia and the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics.

Children from nine to twelve-year-old in different parts of Europe under the guidance of museologists and teachers will built digital maps combining geographical coordinates detected using GPS devices with the creative use of mobile technologies and digital cameras. Children from Bohemia to La Coruna and from the Netherlands to Lithuania, will combine drawings and photographic images with their own comments on items of interest. In this way they will create a digital archive related to their own towns, villages and surrounding communities.

Contribution of Lithuanian partners (2.11MB ppt format file) was presented at the meeting of the project partners 01-03 May 2003, Den Helder, The Netherlands.

Work on the project began in March 2002 and is expected to be completed by late 2004.
