European Cultural Heritage E-maps and Evolving Digital Heritage Repositories Children, teachers select the places of interest, which has to be included in the project, and they start collecting geographic information data using a GPS device. The Old Town of Vilnius has been selected in Lithuania. At the same time as collecting the geographic information data, children will track and record all the way points of the route between places of interest. All this data will then be downloaded and merged with a vector map of the selected territory. This map will have previously been made as a vector map at a scale, which enables enlarging without loosing quality. The e-map will be hosted in a map server combined with the databases of the selected places of interest. An children interface will be developed for retrieving through different mobile devices (phones, PAD and pocket PC) the contents created using GPRS, WI-FI and UMTS technologies. E-guide (electronic guide) is a multilingual multimedia tool operating on a platform of geo-heritage information retrieved from the content stored in the Digital Heritage Archive linked to the E-map. The innovation of the E-guide is in using the E-map, which makes it fully compatible with UMTS technology. The E-guide is based on the information produced by all the participating schools and cultural institutions. It is an English web portal www.chimer.org linked to local portals in local languages. The portal will include different modules such as legends, songs, monument descriptions, photos, drawings, webcams, events, eForum, FAQ, cognitive methodology, people behind CHIMER. 3G Mobile Guide Applications – M-guide M-guide (mobile guide) is the multilingual multimedia tool operating on a platform of the content stored in the Digital Heritage Archive linked to the E-map. It is a wireless, personal, multimedia system for accessing information services focused on geo-heritage and retrievable through mobile devices. M-guide is an application, which will enable different types of services to different types of users: SMS messages, WAP real-time maps, access to multi layers heritage information retrieved via WAP, GPRS and UMTS, routing, mapping, positioning, geocoding, reverse-geocoding. |
